Alrighty! It’s time to let the cat out of the bag !
Remember the old cabinet I posted last week , it looked like this. I must reinforce that this cabinet was really one step from the garbage. It was cracked everywhere, warped and filled with holes.
I was waiting for just such a cabinet for this project !
Since I didn’t need any of the insides of this cabinet, we cleared out everything, plus the drawers, and just used the drawer fronts.
The drawer fronts were then applied to this piece of wood, which will later be hinged to the bottom of the cabinet.
Now for a coat of KILZ Primer and a very LIGHT coat of white. Since this cabinet was in terrible shape there really wasn’t any choice but to treat it as a rustic piece of furniture. Embrace it’s flaws.
The previous TIN handles were just NOT gonna cut it! We couldn’t reuse them if we wanted to.
Because of the nature of this project I really didn’t want to spend any money on it. I searched the garage for something that I could use for handles. Right in the corner of the garage sat a box of firewood and branches from the tree in my yard. How perfect!
Isn’t she beautiful ?
Ok, another angle…
But what makes her so different you ask ?
Surely this is just another cabinet… no ?
No
Lets look from this angle..
and who’s that going to check it out ??
Hey Coco !
So lets just turn back the clock a bit.
First we had to make sure there was a vent. Not only to let in a little light but some much needed air.
Then of course there’s the cat flap, which was the only money I spent on this cabinet. Around $12.
Here’s a peek with me holding up the cat flap for a look inside.
LOVE the cracked floor!
So there you have it.
The cat is out of the bag! (or in my case.. the washroom)
Here was Coco’s litter box before ( I’m ashamed to say), in a bathroom that is desperate need of a makeover. (That will be coming soon.)

ReplyDeleteThat's a darn fine idea and you executed it wonderfully Lisa!
ReplyDeletewow! hats for for thinking of turning that into a litter box. and double hats off for making it look amazing!! The branches are so funky. I bet if you ever tire of them, glass knobs would look great and give it a french country feel.
ReplyDeleteHoley Cat Litter! Amazing outcome but such a unique use! I'm in love. And I need to do something similar. I can't stand how dusty my downstairs bathroom is with that litter box in there!
ReplyDeleteOh gosh this is soooo creative! Kudos my friend!!

ReplyDeletehow clever! :) My kittos would probably refuse to use it. :)
ReplyDeletegail
That is so cool! I would love to make something like that for my cats, but they make such a stinkin' mess (literaly) whenever they use the box, I'd be afraid they'd destroy it.

ReplyDeleteThat cabinet is so beautiful! You did an amazing job whitewashing it, and you've completely inspired me because I have what I'd say is your cabinet's sister...it's the exact same line of furniture, I'd say....but just the vanity version, with a mirror...and the strange thing is that I dreamed about it last night (it was in my room as a little girl growing up) and figured I should get it from my mom's place and give it a makeover.
weird :)
ps...It was so not you...I actually forgot to put up the linky on Tuesday Talent show! mommy brain? come on over and link up :)

Love this idea! We need this because sometimes our kitty sneaks in the house when we leave. LOL We will get home and he is lounging on the couch. This would be a beautiful way to keep him indoors. Thanks for submitting. Tara

His box is in my laundry room and I hate it. Love the sticks you used as handles! Thanks so much for coming by and I am sure I will be checking on your projects often.
ReplyDeleteKim
That is just way too clever. I love the suspense that builds in your story of what you were making. I had NO idea it would be this.
ReplyDeleteMichelle
from Trash to Treasure Decorating
Thats too cool. now how would you make an indoor place for a hen? My daughter has her heart set on a chicken for a pet and it wouldn;t be able to be outside for the first long while.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this neat idea with all of us at NIFTY THRIFTY TUESDAYS! Luv those COOL handles!

ReplyDeleteThis is brilliant! I have always wanted to do something like that for our cats, but we recently gave them away. Anyway, I love the branch handles and how cleverly this conceals something that nobody wants to look at. You are a genius.
ReplyDeleteNow that's the real definition of a "cat house". LOL. Seriously, it's extremely clever, loving and well done. You've got one pampered pet.
ReplyDeleteLOVE THE BRANCH HARDWARE! Sorry, was I shouting? I actually gasped out loud when I saw your finished piece. Kudos to the whole combo, the paint, the finish, the branches. Wonderful.

ReplyDelete:) Laura
Oh. My! How creative! I never would have guessed it. Perfect! This is a perfect solution to those necessary, but nasty, exposed litter boxes! Great job!
ReplyDeleteI could go on and on about this. You got my attention with the branch handles! Love that. Then all the grat stuff decorating the top of the chest. Love that. But then the purpose of it is out of this world. Wow. What a great idea and it looks so wonderful.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful idea!! Love the branches and love the idea of hiding the litter box!! AWESOME!
ReplyDeleteI'm doing this exact same thing with a $9 dresser I bought at Salvation Army! Mine's a bit bigger than this but I hope it looks as good when it's done!
ReplyDeleteHi Lisa
ReplyDeleteWow! What a great idea! This is the most creative way to hide the kitty litter box that I have ever seen! I love how you accessorized it. The watering can and cute little bird cage are perfect! Thanks so much for visiting, and for your nice comments!
Now THAT is genius! We don't have cats anymore, but the litter box was always a challenge, especially with dogs in the house! I bet Coco likes her privacy! Beautiful job :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting!
wow, that is awsome! What a great idea and I love the handles. well done!
ReplyDeletePure brilliance!
ReplyDeleteWhat a clever idea. LOVE it!
ReplyDeleteThat has to be the best litter box ever. Love that you embraced the rustic nature of the piece. It really looks great.
ReplyDeleteLisa, Thank you again for linking to the Boardwalk Bragfest! I wanted to let you know that this project has been featured at Bobbypins Boardwalk. Take a look and feel free to grab a "featured" button.

This is a great transformation! Very creative using branches as hardware, too! I love how the picture frame and the branches tie in, color wise. Pretty and practical ~ gotta love it!
ReplyDeleteWow. GREAT idea. I don't even have a pet, but I had to pop over (from Remodelaholic) to say WOW!!
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, that is sooo clever!!! Love it!!
ReplyDeleteWow, clever idea! Looks so nice!
ReplyDeleteOH...MY...GOSH! You are brilliant! Now can you make one of those for my smelly litter box??? Saw you at Better After.
ReplyDeleteI popped on over from Better After. Lisa you are a freaking genius. This is the coolest thing I have seen in weeks.
ReplyDeleteCute! Cute! Cute!
Hi Lisa,
ReplyDeleteI had to come by to say how clever your makeover is. I saw it first at "Remodelaholic blog".
Girl, you could start a business making these for the tiny doggie owners! I have a 5# Yorkie so I keep up with what's popular with the tiny dog owners and this is a popular thing to do but yours is very one of a kind and unique so that makes it BETTER!! :0)
It's just such a sweet transformation!
Do drop by when you have a moment...and have a wonderful day. ~♥~
Hugs,
Stephanie ♥
That is the best use of an old cupboard that I've ever seen. You are so smart. I love it.
ReplyDeletehow very clever...i can see why no one guessed! that's just to cool!
ReplyDeleteThat is just amazing! I love what you have done, and you wouldn't have a clue what is really in there either.
ReplyDeleteThis makes me want to cry! It's absolutely... spectacular! Way to think outside of the box. And no pun intended, ya hear?
ReplyDeleteI love this idea and thank you for posting it. One word of caution though... one of my friends cats got her paw caught in a cat door like that (not flexible). They were out when it happened and by the time they got home a few hours later the cat had dislocated her leg and stressed so badly she eventually died. Better to get one with a vinyl flap or remove the hard plastic one.
ReplyDeleteI love this so very much! I may have already commented before - but I have a question for you: how did you attach the twig handles? Did you have some off the back so they would lay flat? Did you use wood glue? Finishing nails? Screws? I really like how they look & I apologize for not figuring this out by myself!
ReplyDeleteGreat, great transformation!
Hi Vera
ReplyDeleteThanks for leaving your comment. The twigs worked out perfectly. Believe it or not all I did was cut the length and nothing more. I had long straight nails that were long enough to go through the twig and into the doors. I didn't need to use any glue or anything. If you don't have nails long enough you could simply screw in from the back into the twig. I would only use glue as an extra added measure, but not without any nails or screws.
Thanks for dropping by.
Lisa
Thanks Lisa! We ended up screwing from the back of the drawers . . . & they look so cool! I'll be posting pix next week . . . I really appreciate your inspiration & help. Your'e the best!
ReplyDeleteBrilliant! Made me laugh, I had a boyfriend who talked about building something like this once, so that he would not have to look at that unsightly litter box IN THE BASEMENT...yeah, he would have complained no matter where I put it. This is why I got rid of him.
ReplyDeleteYou are a genius.
ReplyDeleteThat's definitely a one-of-a-kind piece. Nice work on hiding the litter box.
ReplyDeleteFabulous! What a great way to repurpose something! Can you share by linking up on Vintage Suitcase Friday?
ReplyDeleteThanks for linking up last week! I loved this so much I featured you this week on Vintage Suitcase Friday! Feel free to come by and link something else up too!

I love love love this idea! I will totally be stealing/doing this myself the next time we get a cat again!! Anything to keep the dog from 'dumpster diving' in the litter box.
ReplyDeleteHa ha! What a fantastic idea. Just looking around your blog, as I am going through some Favorites, and am re-looking at your blog and having fun. Great, great, cabinet -our cat should be so lucky!
ReplyDeleteGenius! Sheer genius! You are so clever! I even dragged my husband over to take a look at this cool project. Our cats box is out in the garage, but if we found something like this I think we'd do it too!
ReplyDeleteVery cute repurpose! By the way, the chest you used is called a washstand. It was what was used before houses had indoor plumbing. You'd put the ewer or pitcher of water and basin in the door part and then set the basin on the top to wash up. The drawers held washcloths, soap, etc. This one looks to be cs. 1920s. Nice!!
ReplyDeleteAlmost a year since your post and I just stumbled across this today. CLEVER!!! So attractive and so useful - best use of a piece of junk I've ever seen!
ReplyDeleteI'm a newbie that just found you a couple of days ago,, I've been back everyday reading past bogs,, (I know thats weird) but oh my gosh I do like your blog!I joined as afollower today,, thankyou for sharing
ReplyDeleteThis is a fantastic idea! The hubs and I were JUST talking about ideas of how we can hide the kitty box and make the space look less cluttered! As soon as I find the perfect shabby piece, I am SO doing this project! Thank you for sharing such a clever idea with all of us! I agree with Teresa... best use of a piece of junk I've seen! Kudos to you!
ReplyDeleteOMG! I adore the branches as the hardware! What an amazing idea to hide the liter box, almost makes me want a little kitty! That is always in the back of my head, where would i put the smelly liter box?! How amazing! LOVE LOVE LOVE it! Great job!
ReplyDeleteWow, that's an awesome idea. And the pieces turned out gorgeous!! I'm your newest follower. I found you on French Country Cottage and started looking around you blog. Fabulous work you do!! Have a great weekend. : )

Thanks for the inspiration!!
Ok, this can just come to my store.
ReplyDeleteYou are amazing!
This is a must--dare I say it?--DO! I have the same powderroom situation going on and I DO NOT LIKE IT! Thank you for the very clever and detailed idea!
ReplyDeleteI really am going to have to tell my parents this idea! We have had our nasty litter box around the house, and now it is in my room. Since we are now doing spring cleaning and redecorating, Ill mention this and see if we can do something similar! Thank you for sharing the idea!
ReplyDeleteAnd to think I have been looking on ebay to purchase a litter box cabinet,, I love this idea, and what a great job you did!!! cant wait to find an old dresser and get started,, I just hate looking at a litter box!! Thanks for the inspiration
ReplyDeleteKim
That is the best place for the litter box!!! Hidden away! I love it! And I bet you do too!
ReplyDeleteDare I say "purrfect"? (sorry, a little cat humor there.) I need to do something like that for my cats...they track litter everywhere even with a rug to catch it. This looks amazing!
ReplyDeleteBest idea ever!!
ReplyDeleteLove it! great job Lisa!
ReplyDeleteI'm pinning it.
gail
Love it! I'm actually working on the same project right now!
ReplyDeleteomgosh, I'm SO making one of these!
ReplyDeleteFANTASTIC! BRILLIANT idea Lisa!!!
How does it contain the smell? Love the idea!!
ReplyDeleteWell... whataya know. I have an almost identical piece of furniture that I bought about 25 yrs ago in an antique store. On mine, the cabinet is on the right side (Looking at it) and the drawers on the left. The piece on the back is scalloped. I've been thinking of redoing it in a red with black glaze. Honestly, I thought this was a one of a kind piece that someone built for himself. I'm surprised to see an identical piece. Right down to the lines across the drawers and all.
ReplyDeleteWow this is soooooo inventive and awesome. I just found your blog via "Hometalk" and have read 2 posts so far and I am in luv!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteThis is by far the most attractive one I've seen yet. My kitty's litterbox is in my small laundry room. I bet I could find something at the thrift store to fit beside my washer..... I'm so motivated! Thank you for sharing this!
ReplyDeleteYou have just given me my next project! We have two wonderful ragdoll cats and I'm planning to make something like this!!
ReplyDeleteThank you!
Thank you lady! Fantabulous idea and neat workmanship. I have to give this a try.
ReplyDeleteGenius!
ReplyDeleteThat is so awesomely amazing! I kept trying to guess what was inside and what a great solution to a big problem. I hate going into houses where the litter box is in the bathroom, there's usually kitty litter on the floor and let's face it, looking at cat poop isn't pleasing.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! What was the thickness of the board you used to attach the drawer fronts to make the door? I am having this dilemma right now; I tried asking at the big box DIY stores, and for the most part got no real help.
ReplyDelete
