A Little Black Magic

I’ve taken a bit of a break the last couple of weeks, trying to enjoy some of the summer weekends.  Plus the fact that it’s just been TOO HOT to do any work outside in the garage.
But here’s a little something I’ve managed to sneak in.
I’ve had this vintage telephone table/gossip bench for about two years in the corner of my garage.  It just kept getting buried under all the new items I’d bring home. But this weekend it took center stage for its makeover.
Looking slightly drab in it’s original condition.

With the help of some black paint,  a sanding block and some matte varathane for good measure…. yada yada yada.. voila!

I didn’t prime this piece because I wanted the wood to come through with distressing.  I didn’t overdo the distressing either… just a little natural wear and tear look.

A great little entryway piece to sit and put your shoes on.

It actually goes very nicely with my newly painted black door.

Since we’re on the topic… as much as I liked it white, the black adds a little dramatic surprise at the end of the hallway.

  2. I must say that I did not like this piece in the before picture. I thought, why bother....but then I saw the after and rally like it! We always need a place to sit to put on shoes or whatever. Great Job!

  5. That turned out beautifully, the black really pops, and I like how you choose to sand the edges and make them look worn. What a wonderful location too, the entry to the home.

  7. I love it black, Lisa! I did my front door black {from white} last year and am glad I did. Besides changing our siding and the white getting lost, it does keep my foyer from appearing too light.

  9. Looks great! Are you at all afraid of chipping since it was not primed? I would like to do this to my kitchen chairs but am afraid of chipping eventually....on the other hand maybe that would add to it. At any rate, it looks amazing.

  10. What a fabulous transformation! Who knew that "sort of attractive" piece was waiting to become black? It wears it very well. And your front door looks great too. I can't decide which way I like it better!

  11. Laniepb.. I'm never afraid of a few chips. When a piece is distressed natural wear and tear including chipping just adds to the character. Oil based products have amazing staying power. I've never really had anything chip or peel. Remember there is also a poly coat on top of all the painted items I redo. Don't be afraid to do those kitchen chairs! Thanks for stopping by!

  12. I LOVE this project!!! Seriously, I would have walked right past it or dismissed it as ugly or outdated! Now I want to find one and paint it, too!!!! Thanks for the inspiration!

  14. I really like it black. Everyone and their grandma paints their furniture with chalk paint in either white, gray, or aqua. That gets a bit boring to see all the time. Your black chair is quite snazzy and dramatic. I love the distressing. It really does add the special touch this antique needed. Good work!

  25. I have always adored telephone tables! They are so hard to find! Yours is so charming and I love it in black. And good call about your front door! It looks great in black - was sort of lost in the white. Thank so much for sharing. I need to makeover my front entrance and this has me inspired! Got to get rid of lots of clutter first :)

  34. Gossip bench from frumpy to fab.
When the weather changes and my front door isn't too hotorcold, I'm painting it black chalkboard paint so we can leave each other notes. Thanks for sharing your black door so I can get a sneak preview of my upcoming door.

  36. That telephone bench is so cute. The distressing is perfect.I'm not a big fan of heavy distressiing. I like that it looks gently aged, but not dirty and messy.

I love the black door, it really made a difference! Nice work :)

  38. Since you didn't prime and, I'm presuming, sand the piece down prior...what type of paint did you use?
