Wallpapered Armoire

Well welcome back to me !
I’ve taken an extra long holiday this year.  I took time off at Christmas to thoroughly enjoy the season and lots of family time.  BUT… I have been working on something the past couple of weeks.  So to make up for my absence, how about an extra long post?

After repurposing  the previous armoire( seen here  in milk paint)  I came across another almost the same.  This armoire though, was larger and much deeper than the last.   Because I thought this piece would be too large for most kitchens or dining rooms to repurpose it like the last, it was decided to leave it as an armoire.
But I just don’t like mirrored door armoires.Eye rolling smile
Our before picture shows the Armoire  with one door already off.  I have to say this was in very good condition.  The inside was immaculate. The outside, although also in great condition was very shiny.  We all know how I feel about shiny.
In any case… off came the mirrored doors.

Armoire Redo in Milk Paint

Mr. Charming actually brought this Armoire home for me one weekend.
Some women like jewelry, some like flowers, I like old furniture wrecks, and my sweetie knows that. Y
So this post will cover a couple of things ~
1. A vintage armoire gets a makeover and a new purpose.
2. I’ll cover how to use Milk Paint.
I know everyone has jumped on the Chalk Paint bandwagon, but I happen to think that although the paint might be great, the paint itself is costly. Couple that with shipping costs and a quart of paint could cost $50 or more.
I’ve been wanting to try Milk Paint for some time. Thankfully I found a local Manufacturer for Milk Paint and went and picked up a few bags. Jennylyn was incredibly helpful.  She went over the instructions, the different finishes for it and the TON of colors available, (and if you can’t find a color you like for some reason, just mix up some powders to make your own). Here are some of the products I picked up at Homestead House Paint Co.

Contest Answer: What in the world has this cabinet become ??

Alrighty!   It’s time to let the cat out of the bag !
Remember the old cabinet I posted last week , it looked like this.  I must reinforce that this cabinet was really one step from the garbage.  It was cracked everywhere, warped and filled with holes.
I was waiting for just such a cabinet for this project !

Since I didn’t need any of the insides of this cabinet, we cleared out everything, plus the drawers, and just used the drawer fronts.

The drawer fronts were then applied to this piece of wood, which will later be hinged to the bottom of the cabinet.Old Cabiinet to litterbox 005
Now for a coat of KILZ Primer and a very LIGHT coat of white.  Since this cabinet was in terrible shape there really wasn’t any choice but to treat it as a rustic piece of furniture.  Embrace it’s flaws.

The previous TIN handles were just NOT gonna cut it!  We couldn’t reuse them if we wanted to.
Because of the nature of this project I really didn’t want to spend any money on it. I searched the garage for something that I could use for handles.  Right in the corner of the garage sat a box  of firewood and branches from the tree in my yard.  How perfect!

Well here she is, all dressed her rustic garb.Old Cabiinet to litterbox 025
Isn’t she beautiful ?

Ok, another angle…

But what makes her so different you ask ?
Surely this is just another cabinet… no ?
No
Lets look from this angle..

and.. perhaps THIS angle.. Old Cabiinet to litterbox 039
and who’s that going to check it out ??
Hey Coco !

So lets just turn back the clock a bit.
First we had to make sure there was a vent. Not only to let in a little light but some much needed air.

Then of course there’s the cat flap, which was the only money I spent on this cabinet.  Around $12.

Here’s a peek with me holding up the cat flap for a look inside.
LOVE the cracked floor!

So there you have it.
The cat is out of the bag!  (or in my case.. the washroom)

Here was Coco’s litter box before ( I’m ashamed to say), in a bathroom that is desperate need of a makeover.  (That will be coming soon.)

Take a Guess – Contest !

Take a look at this very old cabinet.  I got this little archaic relic completely free, and any thriftress worth her salt, never turns anything down that’s free.  I think this is a dry sink, but I could be wrong.  In any case, here it is.  Take a good look at it, it’s about to become something other than what it is.  It will retain its original form, but it will be used for something completely different.
Think outside the box.
Can you guess ??
The handles aren't real metal handles, they’re tin,  and I could bend it in half with one hand, ( I actually did)

The insides were covered in wood mactac.

Become a Follower and leave a comment with your guess.
Try as many times as you like, but one guess per comment. Be concise and descriptive, it just might set you apart from someone else!

The winner will be featured as a guest blogger. We’ll get to know you a little better and  highlight a few of your favorite projects.

The new item will be revealed this weekend.

UPDATE!!I should add that it appears that this cabinet shows larger in the picture than it really is.
The dimensions are:
30" HIGH x 36" WIDE x 20" DEEP
It's not really tall enough to be a bathroom vanity

Good luck !
