Flea Market Dresser

Here's a little project I am currently working on. My mother and I picked up this old, VERY COLOURFUL dresser at a flea market. It was dirt cheap. I forgot to take a picture of it all put together but you get the idea.

Here, it gets a nice coat of primer...

... and then a nice coat of flat brown.

Stay tuned for the finished product.
I'll post pictures as soon as I get (off my lazy butt) it finished!!

  1. re: your flea market dresser
I was glad to find your blog, and love your sense of style! I am about to understand a project very similar to you flea market dresser, and was wondering if you could pass on some advice. I am painted a dresser brown...do I use a flat paint and finish it with laquer? I'm not sure how to get a strong finish on it otherwise. Thanks for any advice you may have...and I look forward to reading more entries to your blog!

  2. Hi Jennifer!
Thank you so much for visiting my blog and for your thoughtful comment.

I hope I understand your question properly.

First of all if the dresser is already painted you'll need to sand it a bit, just rough up the finish so theres nothing shiny on it. If you are changing the colour completely to something totally different I suggest priming the piece. Any primer will do but there is a great primer out there that is a sticky primer. It sticks to anything!

For the finish, I prefer to use a SATIN finish as I believe that furniture should not be shiny or glossy. Satin is one step above flat but gives a durable and wipe-able finish.

When you have given it two coats of satin finish (let dry THOUROUGHLY between coats), and the last coat is very dry... use a SATIN spray lacquer on it....
such as krylon, or anything available at Rona, Home Depot or Lowes. I like Satin because its not glossy.

Spray a nice thin coat on and then the next day spray another coat on it.
Spray works much better because it leaves no lacquered brush strokes!

I hope I've been able to help and would be glad to answer any other questions you have.

    Good luck on it!
If you are willing... send me before and after pics... I would love to feature it on my blog !
